Every other year, since 1979, Beth Israel – The West Temple has staged an original musical show that is the centerpiece of a major fundraising gala that also includes wine, a silent auction, and a sumptuous dessert buffet.
Longtime congregant Charlotte Feldman writes the songs and stories, based (loosely) on popular Broadway musicals, always involving themes of Jewish community and identity rooted in a strong congregation. Rhoda Rosen, a veteran actor who appears in many area productions, directs; with the able assistance of choreographer Diana Strongosky.
The shows involve children, older adults, and parents – even our rabbis – who act, dance, and sing together. Everyone has his or her special talents, some that they didn’t even know they had. Audiences, meanwhile, have a wonderful time watching their fellow congregants clowning around in costume, singing and bringing the story of our small but mighty temple to life.
